Malcolm Kensett of Ballito writes:
I can’t imagine how many times this subject has been discussed in our community.
It’s important to note that our main roads are designed by experts who I guess are well paid for their expertise. So, we trust and pay them, and what do we get?
• Traffic lights that work best when they don’t work.
• High maintenance for repairs when lights are knocked over.
• Red light jumpers.
• Roads with little or no consideration for pedestrians or cyclists.
One backhanded benefit – when driving home we get to know if the electricity supply is off or on.
Next time we need the road design experts I suggest the experts consult our local high schools for some common-sense input but being highly trained I expect this could never happen.
So, instead I will show a well-designed traffic circle that takes into account the well-being and safety of all users.
Traffic circles in East London and Gonubie have cycle tracks and pedestrian walkways. If they, why can’t we?
Ooops, sorry, we have the experts.
