#Letter: Social media beach stabbing posts inaccurate

"The festive season statistics which will be published in the coming weeks will also paint a clearer picture of how the season unfolded." - Ward 22 cllr Privi Makhan.

Ward 22 cllr Privi Makhan writes:

A number of social media posts over this weekend have alluded to stabbings at Salt Rock’s main beach over the festive season.

This is inaccurate and can be clarified with law enforcement who have no record of any reported incidents.

The festive season operational plan was rolled out with collaboration between KDM Community Safety, Saps, CPF, private security and a number of other structures and stakeholders.

In addition to visible policing, with the support of the Salt Rock Neighbourhood Watch and resident stakeholders, we were able to implement a number of additional measures to assist with by-law enforcement during the season, among them:

• Placing booms at the Salt Rock car park, which has been a haven for public drinking for years
• Additional signage in open spaces to highlight activities that are prohibited
• The temporary barricading of the perimeter of the parking area on the western side to prevent abuse of this space.

The Garden Road open space area does remain problematic, with users still contravening a number of by-laws.

These are swiftly reported to law enforcement and dealt with.

There is still a lot that we need to get right, but the assertion that nothing is being done is inaccurate.

I encourage the community to partner with our structures in ward 22 to identify long-term solutions.

The festive season statistics which will be published in the coming weeks will also paint a clearer picture of how the season unfolded.

I can be reached on 073 664 1830, should any member of the ward 22 community wish to engage me directly.
