Rise Up Movement founder in Umhlali, Josha Daniel writes:
As the 2022 school year begins, teen pregnancy has been escalating as per 2021 statistics.
Statistics of more than 36 000 babies delivered by school-going females aged 10 to 19, and more than 1 000 pregnancies recorded in the 10-14 years bracket, are alarming.
More than 60% of births registered had no reliable information of fathers, which brings the question of accountability to the fore.
A sexual act with a minor under 16 years of age constitutes statutory rape. With recent law adjustments, pregnancy cases of minors are to be reported to law authorities. This is to provide aid, counselling and conducting investigations.
Parenting is a learning process and we are never too old to learn.
I offer a few insights to build stronger foundations with our children. Be clear about your own sexual values and attitudes, talk with your children early and often about sex and love and be specific.
Oversee and monitor your children’s activities. Know your children’s friends and their families. Discourage early regular dating.
Take a stand against teens dating people who are older or younger than they are.
Help your teens have options for the future that are much more attractive than early pregnancy and parenthood.
Highlight how much they should value education. Be vigilant of what your children are watching and listening to.
Attempt for a relationship that is warm and affectionate, strong in discipline and rich in communication.
Education is knowledge and knowledge brings empowerment.
