#Letter: Still pressing for traffic solutions in Salt Rock

"On the issue of traffic congestion, it was reaffirmed that while the road belongs to the transport department, KDM community safety also has a responsibility to ensure a smooth traffic flow with minimal disruptions to residents" - councillor Privi Makhan.

Ward 22 councillor Privi Makhan writes:

The two provincial roads in the ward – the main Salt rock road and Sheffield Beach road (P330 and P474), remain in a poor state.

Earlier this week, I finally secured a meeting with the transport department and among the most pressing issues highlighted were the lack of traffic calming measures, signage at intersections and traffic congestion.

The department advised that the application for signage, resubmitted in June last year, was still in the system but with no feedback from the department in Pietermaritzburg.

Officials undertook to fast-track the application.

Regarding inconsistent speed limits and the reduction thereof, the department said it had material available for speed humps but an assessment will first have to be done to determine the viability of this measure as this will not supercede the application for traffic lights.

On the issue of traffic congestion, it was reaffirmed that while the road belongs to the transport department, KDM community safety also has a responsibility to ensure a smooth traffic flow with minimal disruptions to residents.

My specific request for private partnerships in terms of traffic points persons was vetoed by a KDM community safety official at this meeting.

I have since written to KDM’s executive director for community safety and requested feedback in respect of a previous council resolution that allowed this process to unfold on other roads.

It must be noted that between the CEO of the iLembe Chamber of Commerce, Cobus Oelofse, and myself, we are in constant dialogue with relevant officials.
