#Letter: Cost-saving alternative to broken street lights

"Replacing the 496 broken street lights with LED lights, which can be done in 3 to 4 months if contracted out, can provide an annual electricity saving of more than R500 000" - Peter Smit.

Peter Smit of Port Zimbali Estate writes:

Reading about the street lighting situation in KwaDukuza and the shortage of staff, I cannot believe that this work has not been put out to tender with private companies.

Most importantly, street lights should not be repaired but replaced with LED lights with a saving of approximate 100W to 200W per luminaire and with a better lamp life than the MV and HPS lamps used presently.

Replacing the 496 broken street lights with LED lights, which can be done in 3 to 4 months if contracted out, can provide an annual electricity saving of more than R500 000.

This will not only pay for another 100 replacements, but when all 7 000 street lights are done it will provide a saving of more than R7.5-million per annum.
