#Letter: Are voters really taken seriously?

"What could be more important for elected representatives than to commit to the job they have been elected to do, and plan a way forward to ensure services are delivered to our residents?" - Ward 6 DA Caucus leader Tammy Colley.

Ward 6 DA Caucus leader Tammy Colley writes:

Local government is the sphere of government closest to the people.

After local government elections, the new council is inaugurated and councillors are sworn in by a magistrate.

This should indicate the magnitude of the task ahead.

In KwaDukuza municipality this does not seem to be the case.

The inauguration and first council meeting were set to take place on November 16 and 17 last year, but this was postponed to November 22 and 23.

Once this had unfolded, there were a number of things which needed to take place within a legislated timeframe. An example of this was to elect ward committees.

IN OTHER NEWS

While it is true that some council and portfolio meetings have taken place, many simple matters have been dragging on for no apparent reason, apart from the lack of political will by the ruling party.

Examples of this are the election of the MPAC chairperson and the lekgotla.

March 11 and 12 were scheduled for the KwaDukuza municipality’s lekgotla at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban.

The definition of a lekgotla is the gathering of people of a village or community, in this case council and relevant officials, to discuss important issues and plan to place the municipality on a desired trajectory.

What could be more important for elected representatives than to commit to the job they have been elected to do, and plan a way forward to ensure services are delivered to our residents?

The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza insists there be no more delays.

We cannot waste more time in talk shops. We must have visible results on the ground and get to the job of servicing all our communities.
