#Letter: Take action about illegal electricity connections

"The entire administration, including the director in the department, need to step down." - Jay Haricharan.

Jay Haricharan of Salt Rock writes:

The KwaDukuza municipality spokesman has acknowledged there is a huge loss of revenue owing to illegal electricity connections and incompetent staff charging domestic rate for business.

This is shameful and laughable.

Opposition parties raised this issue and were given a cold shoulder. The entire administration, including the director in the department, need to step down. Perhaps the executive council as well.

The subcontractors responsible for the illegal connections should be charged.

KDM media liaison officer Sipho Mkhize responds:

In an interview with the SABC I did concede we have an issue with energy losses.

This is owing to a variety of issues, not incompetent staffing.

I am aware certain news sources have taken information from this interview and narrated it falsely, suggesting we’ve lost hundreds of millions in 8 months and that this is due to incompetent staff.

The above arose from the MPAC meetings we’ve been holding to solicit comments from the public prior to the publication of the annual report.

To resolve the issue of energy losses, the council approved about 4 debtor incentive schemes and amnesty programmes, to which the public has not responded as expected.

We’re engaging Vuthela iLembe LED programme to work on improving communication systems to help reduce losses within the KDM electrical system.

Our focus will be to sharpen the approach relating to community end-user awareness and behaviour changes.
