Rookaya Hussein of Tongaat writes:
I reside in Amanzimnyama Hills. Tongaat Hulett and a landscape company have taken it upon themselves to create a refuse site in a residential area about 20 metres from my property.
Their reasoning is to save costs and create mulch from the debris, but they do not have a mulching machine on site. It’s basically become a dumpsite.
The councillor and other residents have raised the issue with the relevant parties at Tongaat Hulett, the health department and zoning inspector, but no one seems to be the least interested in rectifying the matter.
Apart from the illegal nature of the dumping, this reduces the property value of houses in the area. It is also a health issue – it smells and is becoming a breeding ground for rodents and snakes.
Sadly, the once beautiful and scenic residential area will soon be no more.
Tongaat Hulett head of communications, Virginia Horsley, responds as follows:
Tongaat Hulett is working to address these concerns. Our suppliers’ chipper, which is used to mulch the garden refuse, has been out of service.
We can confirm that within the next month mulching activities will resume and the stored garden refuse will be cleared.
Please note that this garden refuse is not being dumped but rather being stored on Tongaat Hulett land which is legally allowed. We are, however, working to identify an alternative site for these activities.
