#Letter: Swift action needed

"The energy losses to date in this financial year come to R214-million. This alone could cripple the financial viability of the KwaDukuza municipality" - KwaDukuza DA caucus whip Privi Makhan.

KwaDukuza DA caucus whip Privi Makhan writes:

The municipal budget allocation for bulk purchases in the financial year 2021/22 was just over R820-million.

The energy losses to date in this financial year comes to R214-million. This alone could cripple the financial viability of the KwaDukuza municipality.

Among the factors that contribute to these alarming losses are illegal electricity connections.

While there have been attempts recently to tackle this scourge, municipalities need to adopt a more aggressive approach in ensuring that this criminal act is dealt with swiftly.

I have written to the executive director of electrical engineering to request the following:

• That the department secures infrastructure by deploying security patrols in hotspot areas and at strategic infrastructure in conjunction with Community Safety and within the allocated budget.

• That it considers looking into innovative technology to trace stolen cables and other electrical infrastructure.

• That all reports of illegal connections are dealt with confidentially and within a reasonable turnaround time.

The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza will continue to ensure that paying residents and ratepayers are no longer impacted or compromised by acts of brazen criminality.
