Daniel Santhomay of Shaka’s Head writes:
A year ago I wrote a letter to a local newspaper regarding non-service delivery in Ballito’s not so rich neighbour (Shaka’s Head) and KwaDukuza municipality’s (KDM) forgotten, neglected community.
To date, nothing has changed.
I walk my son to school every morning where children run the gauntlet of speeding taxis, overgrown verges, unsightly illegal dumping on every open space available in our streets, overflowing storm water drains and non-existent pavements. Believe me, the list goes on.
Our streets have potholes too numerous to count and non-working streetlights should have been repaired months ago.
Instead of loadshedding we have rolling blackouts at any given time while everyone around Shaka’s Head has full power 24/7.
Service delivery is non-existent, yet municipal vehicles are often seen driving around at leisure.
How can a municipality not fully utilise funds allocated for service delivery, yet thousands of people go days on end without electricity, water and sanitation, and community upliftment?
I challenge any politician from any party to refute these claims, or better still, change the norm that thousands of working class citizens in various neglected communities put up with every day until they are sold another pipe dream.
Service delivery should be consistent and not seasonal, such as when votes are needed to keep leaders in office.
The roadshows started and ended with free T-shirts, maskandi bands, kwaito concerts and free KFC for those in attendance.
Ed – Letter shortened.
