DA KZN spokesperson on Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Heinz de Boer, writes:
The recent crackdown on non-compliant and unlicensed taverns must be commended, but should be the norm and not an exception.
A recent spate of tavern shootings, coupled with alcohol-related road deaths and interpersonal violence is a clear indication of the destructive effects alcohol can have on the economy and lives.
Multi-departmental raids are a must and not an option if the scourge of alcohol-related deaths is to be curbed.
In this regard, the Democratic Alliance will be carefully analysing the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Liquor Authority targets and insist on an upward trend in enforcement.
The days of self-set departmental targets for enforcement operations should be scrapped as they have largely become a tick box exercise and ineffectual.
Every ward in our province has dozens of unlicensed alcohol outlets – with rural areas dotted with makeshift taverns.
Interestingly, complaints from the public about unlicensed and non-complying outlets often take months to resolve.
And, often, the doors open as soon as the police have left.
Whereas the liquor industry contributes significantly to the economy, this benefit should never come at the expense of the law and people’s lives.
The DA will continue to insist on improved enforcement and raids that make a meaningful impact on society.
