#Letter: The final countdown – carpe diem!

Many people can relate to having minimal qualifications but have become successful in their fields of endeavour"- Ismael Asmal.

KwaDukuza resident Ismael Asmal writes:

Greek philosopher Aristotle once accurately remarked that “the roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet”.

In just over a month the 2022 matriculants will sit for an examination that will charter the map for the rest of their lives – a map of which today they are the cartographers.

Quite early in our lives, it was impressed upon us at home that the most powerful weapon that cannot be take away from us, is education.

Admittedly, education alone does not guarantee success, but one’s performance will determine the availability of choices one will have for a career path.

Many people can relate to having minimal qualifications but have become successful in their fields of endeavour.

What a good education does is that it informs you better, in part, to making better decisions and giving you opportunities that you may never have had without it.

Like a house with a firm foundation, it can stand the test of time even when conditions become treacherous and dangerous – and as the adage goes, “a smooth sea never made a skillful mariner”.

Education knows no wealth or privilege – it is simply the will and determination, the courage and zest and, importantly, the mindset to be a go-getter to achieve.

After all, Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame only started franchising his chicken business at age 65 with just a 105 dollars security grant he was receiving.

I always maintain that whether you are at a private school or a state school in South Africa, it does not matter. It’s your commitment that counts.

So, my advice is simple: Make these last few weeks of your schooling career count like no other.
