#Letter: No urgency to help flood victims

"It is completely unacceptable that residents have to live in community halls with little consideration for their dignity and well-being" - Tammy Colley.

Ward 6 councillor Tammy Colley writes:

The floods that ravaged our province in April may well be a memory for many of us. The focus now is on rebuilding and moving forward with our day-to-day lives.

We have seen mop-up operations and repairs being done to roads and other infrastructure.

There can be no denying that we still have a way to go to get back to where we were before this natural disaster took place.

Two-hundred and thirty-one people who lost their homes have been living in community halls for the past six months.

Temporary residential units have been built, and park homes have been donated to accommodate these unfortunate residents of KwaDukuza.

The temporary units may have been built, but because there are no services the people still living in community halls remain where they are.

The Democratic Alliance has repeatedly called for a detailed breakdown of the number of people living in community halls and temporary units, but to date the information has not been forthcoming.

It is completely unacceptable that residents have to live in community halls with little consideration for their dignity and well-being.

The various government departments tasked with restoring dignity to those who have been so drastically affected by the floods do not seem to care about the conditions that those who have lost their homes must endure.

The Auditor General has reported that only 6% of disaster funding for KZN has been spent in the first report released in September.

Any disaster should have a rapid and urgent response to the needs of those affected. This has not proven to be the case.
