#Letter: Lack of urgency endangers lives

"Must we first wait for people to die before there will be urgency to repair the traffic lights?" - Melissa Vembali.

Darnall Ward 2 PR councillor Melissa Vembali writes:

Malfunctioning traffic lights in Darnall have for some time been a major safety concern for motorists, pedestrians and Darnall Community Policing forum members.

Community members have been complaining to traffic officials in charge of traffic light maintenance, but this has been in vain.

Sometimes, for example, the traffic lights would work for two months and then be out of order for 10 months.

Many accidents have already taken place as a result, and it’s only a miracle that no major injuries and deaths have been recorded.

Must we first wait for people to die before there will be urgency to repair the traffic lights?

Is this fair? Surely, as a government, we need to prioritise the well-being of our people.

I hear people say thieves are stealing the cables. Be that as it may, my only concern is whether the traffic lights are going to be fixed or not and what alternative solutions there may be.

At the moment no traffic police regulate traffic. If repairs cannot be done, then at least turn intersections into 4-way stops with speed humps to slow down speeding.

Also ensure proper road markings and roads signs.

I call on road authorities to intervene before we lose innocent lives.
