#Letter: Christmas Fair a celebration of goodwill

"I am sure the Jex family, who started the fair in 1952 as early farming settlers, would have loved the rain as much as they were raising funds for communities in the Umvoti area" - Peter Hodsdon.

Peter Hodsdon of Nkobongo Resource Centre writes:

On behalf of the NRC I offer sincere congratulations on the amazing achievement of the Christmas Fair Fund turning 70.

I was blown away by the friendliness of the fund’s team and the layout of marquees.

Despite intermittent rain it was good to meet our fellow workers from Summerhill, The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund, Hearts that Hope, St Vincents and all the folk in the frontline trenches loyally supported by you every year.

I will remember this 2022 event as the “Thanksgiving Fair”, celebrating 70 years of community involvement.

Thanksgiving was started by the American Pilgrim Fathers in 1620, who celebrated a harvest with the indigenous Red Indian tribe who sustained them through a harsh winter.

The analogy being that we all have endured a very harsh “winter” with Covid, political rioting/looting and just a few months ago, devastating floods. As you said, a “new heartbeat/life” has been born again in the fair.

Now you enable us to celebrate this with the communities that surround us.

I am sure the Jex family, who started the fair in 1952 as early farming settlers, would have loved the rain as much as they were raising funds for communities in the Umvoti area.

Blessings and best wishes for the future of this special fair.
