#Letter: Staggering level of reckless driving

"It is more than just the disregard of the rules of the road, it is a callous and deliberate recklessness" - Claudio Ferri.

Claudio Ferri of Zimbali writes:

From my observations, the degree to which drivers are abusing, disobeying and totally ignoring the rules of the road has increased exponentially over the past year.

It’s is more than just the disregard of the rules of the road, it is a callous and deliberate recklessness.

This was highlighted when some mindless moron appeared before a court last week after having decided to drive his Range Rover using his feet while the rest of his body was suspended outside the driver’s window. The R8 000 fine barely covered his monthly petrol expenses and probably meant nothing to someone driving a million Rand car.

The number of wilful violations, outright recklessness and lack of consideration for the lives of other road users are staggering.

The obvious has to be stated-this country has virtually no law enforcement presence on the roads and nor is there any ministerial inclination to do so – only meaningless rhetoric.
All this on top of the prevailing attitude where laws, rules and etiquette have been abandoned across all spheres of our civil society. This has simply had the effect of emboldening the transgressors.

Throw into this mix the condition of our roads.

The fact that Fikile Mbalula is Minister of Transport speaks volumes.
Unfortunately, I have to predict that the death toll on our roads this ‘festive season’ will set a record and Minister Mbalula will no doubt, in his superficial and diabolical way, be offering the usual and mundane expression of ‘thoughts and prayers’ for the families of the victims.

Please drive safely!
