#Letter: A random act of kindness

"But with a jovial "I insist!", he tapped the card reader with his phone and the deed was done. I was speechless and overwhelmed really, and a little tearful, whereupon he came around and gave me a hug" - Carol Cumming.

Ballito resident Carol Cumming writes:

Shopping at Lifestyle Spar recently, I heard a man asking in rather exasperated tones if anyone knew where along the multitude rows of shelves he could find Orley Whip.

Having recently bought some myself, I knew exactly where it was and told him, whereupon, with a quick but courteous thank you, he headed off.

I proceeded at a much more measured pace (being elderly) to collect the items I had on my list.

A short while later our paths crossed again and we struck up a conversation about the merits of Orley Whip and its uses.

He intended making something nice for his mother-in-law and asked me if I thought Orley Whip was suitable for the purpose. I assured him it was and offered a few snippets about what made it especially attractive.

Just a pleasant little tête-à-tête as one might have with any passing stranger while shopping … or so I thought.

My shopping done, I was at the till checking out and there at the very next till was my recent acquaintance with his family.

He spontaneously informed the cashier he would be paying my bill. As one might expect in such a situation, I was somewhat non-plussed for a second, but when he moved to actually do so, I found my tongue and objected quite vehemently, especially because the bill was pretty substantial.

But with a jovial “I insist!”, he tapped the card reader with his phone and the deed was done. I was speechless and overwhelmed really, and a little tearful, whereupon he came around and gave me a hug.

And then we went our separate ways, me in a daze, overwhelmed by what had just happened.

A cliché it may be, but in truth there are some very kind people in our world, and my family will always treasure the memory of this random act of kindness. And we hope that should the gentleman and his family read this, they should know the warmth and joy my telling of the story has brought to all who hear it.
