Ken Lever of Ballito writes:
Excessive noise can be hell, and Ian Chart (Courier 10/02/23) is quite right – it is getting out of hand on the Dolphin Coast.
If readers don’t know, the KwaDukuza municipality introduced By-Law Chapter 21 titled “Nuisance Noise” about 20 years ago – not that anyone in the municipality seems to know.
Or possibly residents and ratepayers are not making enough “noise” about it!
The by-law can be viewed on the Docrra website.
I live three properties north of Ballito Drive and Friday, Saturday and often Sunday nights – particularly after 10.30pm and sometimes up to 2am – the noise levels produced by Souped Up Simons and Motorcycle Michaels must be well over the 95dBA maximum listed in the by-law.
But how to get anyone in authority to respond with the correct and certified equipment?
The by-law claims there is someone called a “Noise Control Officer ”, although I haven’t located him or her yet.
I suggest you approach Docrra (and join if you have not done so yet) with specific information and see if they can get a reaction and positive response from our municipal officials.
Formal testing clearly needs to be done at the correct times.
Municipal spokesperson Sipho Mkhize responds:
The municipality does not have a “noise control officer”, it depends on its traffic and crime prevention officers to deal with all enforcement related issues.
Unfortunately, these teams work 6am10pm shifts, so anything that happens beyond this time is hard to mitigate.
I have forwarded the letter to the director: community safety and asked that he looks into dealing with the reported nuisance.
