#Letter: Everyone needs to arrive alive!

"When challenged, it has been noted that many will show us weapons out of their windows and also swear at motorists" - Lynn Hulland.

Lynn Hulland of Palm Lakes Estate, Tinley Manor, writes:

Surely the profile article “A day in the hectic life of a taxi driver” (Courier, April 7) was an April Fool’s joke?

Sandile ‘Bhibhi’ Vumba and the many other taxi drivers are a hazard to any and all road users.

Do taxi drivers not realise or understand that the motorists who hurl abuse, gestures and swear at them are also trying to arrive at work and school, but alive with cars intact with children and parents not frightened out of there lives!

Taxi drivers seem to truly believe they are a law unto themselves and normal rules of the roads don’t apply to them – including speeding, stopping and blocking corners, traffic lights, making U-turns and demanding extra lanes.

Unfortunately we are among hundreds who also have to pass roadworks over flood-damaged bridges and our lives are placed in jeopardy by these taxi drivers who insist on racing up the left hand side of us poor folk trying to get home safely.

When challenged, it has been noted that many will show us weapons out of their windows and also swear at motorists.

Police seem to take little or no notice when they are around.

Yes, Mr Vunba, we all agree that, sadly, with the complete lack of public transport in this province (caused by taxi bosses), you are a necessity, but could you not follow rules like us normal poor folk do, who are desperate to arrive alive at our destinations?

Imagine if we all adopted your attitude and feel we also are entitled to disregard any and all so-called traffic laws as we also have to get ourselves to our destinations on time.
