#Letter: Umhlali K9 unit makeover project needs support

"Focus this year will be on the kennels and office buildings to show our appreciation for the work they do and to motivate the members" - Yvonne Ferrie.

Director of Dolphin Damp Solutions, Yvonne Ferrie, writes:

In 2019 the KwaDukuza community took on the task of renovating the main sections of our local police station.

The response from businesses and the community was overwhelming and served as a massive boost to the morale at the station.

Unfortunately we did not have the time or resources to address the requirements of the Umhlali K9 unit, which we hope to rectify this year.

Currently the unit has four dogs trained in specific areas – search and rescue, narcotics, tracking and patrol work.

We met with the new Commander, Captain Maharaj, to assess their needs.

Focus this year will be on the kennels and office buildings to show our appreciation for the work they do and to motivate the members.

As we gear up to launch our support for 2023 as part of Mandela Day next month, we would like to appeal to the public and business sector to join hands with us to make this project a success.

A comprehensive wish list includes, among others, building materials, appliances, garden equipment, cleaning materials and even car tyres. A wooden gazebo or materials to build one would be a bonus.

If you wish to support this worthy initiative, contact Jaqui Muir at 083 534.7047 or email

jaquimuir@gmail.com to obtain a full list of requirements.
