#Letter: A sense of community in action

"For the staff at the Umhlali Post Office, the dire situation without running water became untenable" - Privi Makhan.

Ward 22 councillor Privi Makhan writes:

True community heroes come in the form of individuals, social partners or business. Siza Water is a case in point.

Through their ongoing engagement with ward councillors and their community centric approach, they always rise to a challenge.

For the staff at the Umhlali Post Office, the dire situation without running water became untenable.

With the SA Post Office being under business rescue, the settlement of utilities remain a non-priority issue, despite them having received an almost R7-billion bailout.

Last week we reached out to the community of ward 22 to assist with settling the utility’s debt so water supply to the post office could be restored.

The generosity of our community is truly overwhelming, as R1 100 was paid by two local residents and the balance of R4 600 was settled by Siza Water.

The gratitude of the staff was tangible. It is truly an extraordinary experience to work with entities that put people before profits.

Our gratitude to Siza Water for their commitment to assist with community challenges is immeasurable.
