#Letter: Heroic effort to rescue injured hadeda

Salt Rock resident Ronel Price thanks Lindy Elmes for going above and beyond.

With reference to last week’s article ‘Monkey shootings on the rise‘, I would like to express my appreciation to Lindy Elmes and her Wildlife Rescue team for their efforts in rescuing a bird at Salt Rock Caravan Park.

We found a hadeda with both legs entangled in fishing line. The only person I could find to help the injured bird was Lindy. Although she was in a meeting at the time, she took the time to send out a team member to assist.

It was extremely difficult to catch the bird, as it was alert and able to fly. I fed it every day in an effort to keep it at our camp and to give Lindy time to get to the park. For about two weeks, Lindy and her team came out and not once gave up. The hadeda became weaker and very traumatised.

On a Sunday, they set up a large cage and, a few hours later, we managed to lure it inside and close the door. Lindy and Josh rushed to the park. Lindy, inside the cage with the bird on her lap, gently cut and removed the line, which had cut deeply into the flesh, and treated the wounds.

What an incredibly moving moment it was for us and the crowd of people who had gathered to watch the rescue to see it fly away. What a blessed day and unforgettable moment that was.
Thanks again to Lindy and her rescue team for their selfless dedication to saving and protecting wildlife.

We salute you and hope that funding comes your way for the crucial work you do.
