#Letter: Safety fears grow as Tongaat Sports Centre deteriorates
Neville Wagner writes that repairs need to be fast-tracked ahead of an upcoming karate tournament.
Tongaat resident Neville Wagner writes:
I am writing to formally raise concerns regarding the deteriorating condition of the Tongaat Sports Centre.
Over the past several years, the facility has steadily declined, and recent incidents have highlighted the immediate risks posed to our members, particularly our karate students.
Roof panels and light fixtures have fallen during training sessions. Thankfully, no one has been seriously injured, but the potential for severe harm is undeniable. In addition, the main hall and side rooms are in disrepair, with broken doors, windows and toilets, unhygienic change rooms and a persistent sewerage smell.
The overall state of the centre is unacceptable and unsafe.
It is deeply concerning that funds have been allocated to non-essential projects, such as flower planting and parking lot markings, while critical structural and safety issues remain unaddressed.
This misallocation has left the facility in a horrific state, unfit for the community it serves.
Given the seriousness of these hazards, I strongly recommend bypassing the standard tender process and instead initiating an emergency RFQ. Local suppliers within the greater Tongaat area are well positioned to carry out the necessary repairs quickly and cost-effectively, while also supporting local businesses.
This matter is particularly urgent, as we are hosting an international karate tournament in April, with delegates and clubs from across South Africa and abroad. Presenting a clean, safe, and functional sports centre will reflect positively on Tongaat and our country as a whole.
Your urgent attention to this matter is essential to ensure the safety of all who use the centre.
eThekwini spokesperson Luthando Ngubane acknowledged receipt of the complaint. He said the municipality was in the process of collecting more information and would provide a comprehensive response once available.
