#Opinion: Residents ask Ramaphosa: Fix these issues
President Ramaphosa visited iLembe last Tuesday.
Ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s visit to Ndwedwe on Tuesday, we asked our Facebook audience which local and national issues deserve greater attention. This is what they had to say.
Take a drive, Mr President
Tyreece Tweedie – It’s 2026 and people are still living in mud houses and shacks – how is this even possible after 30 years of freedom? The President shouldn’t drive on the freeway, instead he should use the old road (R102) and see how his people live along the road – absolutely sad.
Ndabenhle Mthokozisi Mzoneli – Nationally, thanks for standing up for Palestine and a high five on our ships in Iran. Locally, there should be more investment in our region. We have so much potential.
Mzamo Manqoba Gumede – The issue of illegal foreigners in our country.
James Westoby – [Restoring the] ski boat launch site at Tinley Manor.
Erica Platter – Betting. [Ed – One in three South African men under the age of 44 are gambling online at least once a week, according to the Roots consumer survey.]
Basic services in crisis
Jade Ramrattan – Water provision, escalated electricity and water prices… the cost of living versus the salaries we receive.
Weza Holdings – The municipality needs to keep up the pace with investment. They collect rates but they are behind with infrastructure. It won’t help having all these developments while the municipality is five years behind.
Emma Demmer – The electrical infrastructure urgently needs an upgrade. Every time there is a storm, or during peak holiday season, we have outages all over Ballito and surrounding areas!
Kathryn Costello – Corruption: Electricity is being stolen and nothing is done by the municipality. A decent township should replace the ‘informal settlement’/aka squatter camp at Compensation. The money can come from all that that has been stolen by their comrades.
Eugene Moodley – Service delivery, failing infrastructure, unemployment and corruption.
Cam Andrews – Failing infrastructure and municipal corruption – same as everywhere.
Michelle Lotz – Infrastructure maintenance (basic power and water included), unemployment and corrupt municipal officials.
Andile Muthiwokuphasa Nduli – Water, especially in Maphumulo and Ndwedwe.
Themba Bhibha – Water and sanitation at Shayamoya and Shakaskraal, our councillors are doing nothing about it.
Jobs, education and industry
Khanyisile Angel Mgobhozi – The high number of unemployed graduates.
Hlengiwe Mzukulu KaMnukwa Luthuli – Unemployment, potholes, sewer leakage and water problems.
Thabile Perceverence – We need jobs, houses and to reduce the level of crime.
John Chandler – Jobs… including Tongaat Hulett sustainability and and the revival of Isithebe.
Siyabonga Madlala – Tongaat Hulett’s business rescue certainty.
Trevor B Graham – Revival of the Isithebe Industrial Estate.
Jayanthi Laldas – Job creation and law enforcement.
Carol Church – Employment for our youth.
Trevor Memela – The path of investing in education!
Ravin Singh – Education. Build a university.
