#Letter: Recurring burst pipe needs attention

Abel Acuna writes that more should be done to curb constant water losses on Leonora Drive.

Ballito resident Abel Acuña writes:

For years, there have been near monthly pipe bursts at the bottom of Leonora Drive and Dolphin Crescent.

Apart from the inconvenience, water wastage and all the repair costs, this seems to be going on forever, bit by bit, without a final solution being reached.

It looks like the system down there is either incorrectly designed to take the water pressure, or the whole piping is too old and needs to be completely replaced. Any comments from Siza Water?

Siza Water operations manager Kobus Fourie responds:

Siza Water is aware of the recurring pipe burst history at the Leonora Drive and Dolphin Crescent (Waterberry) intersection and has budgeted in the 2026 financial year to replace a section of the asbestos cement pipe at this intersection as part of our ongoing infrastructure upgrade programme.

The bursts, especially in 2025, have been caused by ageing asbestos cement (AC) pipework in this section.

We are committed to resolving this matter and ensuring a lasting solution for the residents.
