#Letter: Another fisherman’s tale

Following the Courier story, "Teens haul in Garrick by hand", KwaDukuza fisherman Ismail Asmal shares a similar tale of his own.

Ismail Asmal of KwaDukuza writes:

Your article last week “Teens haul in garrick by hand” refers.

It certainly is a big event to catch a big game fish without proper tackle.

About 20 years ago my friend Laloo and I were fishing at Forces Deep at Blythedale beach early one morning.

Suddenly we saw something bobbing up and down in the calm water. Laloo went closer and shouted, “It’s a big fish”.

Without hesitation he dived in and swam to the garrick, which had a mullet and hook in its mouth and was “worse for wear”.

He hauled it out without much fuss. After an hour a man came along and told us that he lost a big fish. He saw the garrick and claimed it was his.

Laloo was unmoved and politely asked the man to leave or continue trying.

That’s one fishing story I’ll never forget.
