#Letters: Democratic Alliance defends central business district crackdown

"Businesses shut down were given enough time to ensure law compliance."

Cllr Bulelwa Mvulana of the DA writes:

The Democratic Alliance in KwaDukuza welcomes the multi-disciplinary enforcement blitz conducted by the Economic Department Portfolio Committee in the KwaDukuza central business district.

The recent food poisoning crisis has cast a glaring spotlight on the lack of oversight and enforcement.

Despite this being a recommendation of the portfolio committee, we note the cheap politicking from smaller political parties who are trying to garner a voice in the absence of structures and adequate policies.

We further note the misinformed sentiment that businesses were targeted. The DA is satisfied that the businesses that were shut down were given enough time to comply before enforcement was applied.

Our economic policy aims to create a society in which all South Africans enjoy both the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution, and the opportunities to take advantage of those freedoms.

While we acknowledge the gaps in the current system, the Democratic Alliance will vehemently advocate for the rule of law to be upheld, while ensuring that an enabling economy unfolds in KwaDukuza. We further acknowledge the role that all stakeholders should be playing in creating an enabling environment for every business to thrive.
