#Letters: A new broom sweeps clean in the provincial public works department

Cost-cutting measures and a move towards efficiency bodes well for KZN’s fiscal health, writes DA MPL, Tammy Colley.

The proverb – a new broom sweeps clean – refers to individuals newly appointed to positions of responsibility, who make far-reaching changes and indeed, the saying could well have been penned specifically for KZN’s Democratic Alliance (DA) MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Martin Meyer.

The MEC’s sweeping changes since first taking office six months ago include the announcement of a revised cellphone and data policy for officials. This, after some were racking up bills of thousands of rands. The officials have now been instructed to take out their own cell phone contracts with the department only paying a portion of their bills.

Paying attention to smaller details such as this ultimately leads to the same scrutiny when it comes to larger projects and activities within the department.

While the needs of KZN’s people continue to grow, regrettably, the provincial coffers are not. MEC Meyer was clear when he assumed office that public funds must be used to benefit the public – and not consumed by wasteful expenditure – and his steadfast commitment to this must be welcomed.

As part of KZN’s Government of Provincial Unity (GPU), the DA remains committed to transparent and accountable governance and will continue to ensure that our province’s people are prioritised over politicians and officials.
