#Letter: The fascinating camouflage of leaf insects

Barbara Grobbler writes about her first time seeing the clever creatures.

Barbara Grobbler of Ballito writes:

I recently spotted the most fascinating little creature at Zara’s Cafe, a leaf insect! I had never seen one before.

It was so perfectly camouflaged and looked just like a real leaf! Nature never stops amazing me. Thought I’d share this beautiful moment with you all!

Leaf insects form part of the katydid family and are also commonly known as bush crickets. They can be identified by their size (typically between 4-6cm), antennae that are longer than their body and, of course, the incredible leaf camouflage. – Ed.
