On the Road – 10 April 2015

Dolphin Coast Striders conquer Two Oceans before taking on Comrades.

As I stood at the start of the 46th Two Oceans marathon last weekend I was surrounded by nervous and excited runners.

The clouds, full moon and mountains created an eerie, almost magical setting as everyone rushed to get into the correct starting pen.

As the countdown began, I happened to see a Dutch runner who was doing his first Oceans. He was simply soaking in the atmosphere.

As the strains of Shosholoza gathered momentum he looked round in amazement with tears streaming down his cheeks.

In that moment, I was reminded not only how privileged we are to take part in these races.

The first line of Shosholozo reads Shosholoza ku lezontaba.

The loose English translation is “move fast on those mountains”.

Overcast and slightly cooler weather conditions made for perfect “moving fast” up Ou Kaapse Weg.

Needless to say some of us moved faster than others, but 20 Dolphins completed the ultra and three Dolphins the half marathon.

Congratulations to everyone who took part. Special congratulations to Sipho Myeni who was the first Dolphin home in a fantastic time of 4:09:38 as well as to Delia who completed her tenth and received her blue number.

The DCS Comrades route run will take place on Sunday, April 19. If you are interested in participating please get in contact with a committee member or email dolphincoaststriders@gmail.com.
