Exchanging walking sticks with sport

You are never too old to do anything you want!

About 100 senior citizens of Mandeni took part in the Golden Games on Friday July 17 at Ncede Omhlophe sports field.

The games included rugby – throwing, passing and kicking the ball, rig the stick and athletics.

On August 5 the selected team will go to Maphumulo to compete with other municipalities within the Ilembe district. On that day a district team will be selected for the provisional games in September.

Msawenkosi Dube (66) who was competing in athletics and ran the 200 meters, said he has been taking part in these games since 2010.

“Competing makes me feel younger than I am. Most of the people in my age group cannot run to save their lives, but come to Dube, I run faster than some younger people,” said Dube.

Meanwhile Thokozile Ndimande (73) said she will keep on taking part in the games until her body lets her down.

“I was given a walking stick as a present, but I won’t be using it as I am fit and healthy because of the sport,” said Ndimande.

Hloniphani Ntuli from Mandeni municipality said although they are happy with the number of senior citizens attending the games there are very few men taking part.

“We wish to encourage omkhulu (senior men) to please come and join the other senior citizens,” said Ntuli.
