SA team performs at World Adaptive Champs

Ballito's Bongani Xulu delivers oath on behalf of event officials.

The first World Adaptive Surfing Championships, hosted by the International Surfing Association (ISA) in La Jolla, California, got under way on Friday, September 25.

The South African team that qualified for the event performed really well in the competition and can be proud of their achievements.

At the official opening of the event, 69 surfers from 18 countries took part in an inspirational Parade of Nations Ceremony and Pouring of the Sands, an ISA tradition that sees athletes mixing sand from the beaches of the country they represent.

This was followed by the athletes and officials oaths.

South African official, Bongani Xulu from Ballito, was selected by the (ISA) to make the oath on behalf of the event officials, a huge honour for the young man.

South African team captain, Antony Smyth of Hout Bay in Cape Town, surfed his way to a well-deserved second place in the stand-up final after falling short to Australian Mark Stewart.
