This year’s Speedster event was run in true Heritage Day style last Wednesday evening, September 23, as 80 bold runners and walkers took to the streets to conquer the 4km course in the event’s ninth year.
Lining up on the makeshift start line near Mozambik restaurant, runners and walkers had their tekkies tied securely as they eagerly awaited the signal to set off.
It was not long before the leading man, Andrew Erasmus turned the corner and powered towards the finish in a staggering time of 13 minutes and 35 seconds.
Erasmus’ twin brother, Steven followed a few seconds later to finish in second place in a time of 13:59, while third position was taken by Isaac Silayi moments later, crossing the line in 14:06.
The race was not as tightly contested among the ladies, with Comrades veteran Janine Goes taking the win in an impressive time of 17:43, having gained an unreachable lead of about 40 seconds over the other female runners.
Showing their mettle on the running arena, second place went to Delia Jay in a time of 19:20, while third place was enjoyed by Pasma Gumede, who finished with a time of 19:49.
Speedster organiser, Bev Livingstone said the event was a resounding success and she looks forward to marking the race’s tenth year in 2016.
“What a wonderful evening – for the first time in four years, we actually had clear skies,” said Livingstone, who added that after the run, the superb food provided by Mozambik went down very well.
The top three men and women each received prizes including Island Stay t-shirts, deluxe toiletries and camping chairs.
“Those of you who missed this year’s entry and would like to take part, please be sure to book early as next year will be our tenth year running.”
