Dolphins trump the mighty Quins

The gamble paid off and former Currie Cup player, Moses Mpande crossed the chalk and Anthony Fivas converted to secure a seven point victory for the Dolphins.

The boys from Ballito made a nail-biter comeback from being 21-14 down at half time to beating the Bluff Harlequins 35-28 on Saturday, April 9 in Durban.

With five minutes left on the clock, the Dolphins and Harlequins were dead even on 28 points each, when the Quins conceded a penalty in front of the poles to great jubilation from the Dolphins’ camp.

However, shock waves were sent through the dugout when the Dolphins decided to run the ball, rather than secure three easy points. Fortunately the gamble paid off and former Currie Cup player, Moses Mpande crossed the chalk and Anthony Fivas converted to secure a seven point victory for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins pulled off slick backline moves in the first half that resulted in two tries, but tentative tackling opened up gaps in their defense allowing the Harlequins to score three converted tries.

With the wind at their backs in the second half, a focused Dolphins side dotted down three converted tries to the Harlequins’ one to claim their first scalp of the season.

The Dolphins seconds put up a valiant fight but lost out 29-20 to the “rough ‘n tough” boys from the Bluff.

Man of the match, Damien Le Marque scored two tries in the first half and the teams entered the change rooms with the Dolphins trailing the Harlequins 21-10 at half time.

The second half yielded two more tries for the Dolphins to a try and penalty by the Harlequins.

With the first team’s maiden victory of the season under their belts, spirits were high and pizzas and beers were in order.

First team try scorers were Siya Ngcobo (two tries), Zamani Mthembu, Anthony Fivas, Moses Mpande and men of the match were Leon van der Bank and Giraffe Dlamini.

Second team try scorers were Damien Le Marque (two tries), Dawie Pretorius and Chris Anker and men of the match were Damien Le Marque (forwards) and Mphilo Mthembu (backs).

This weekend the Dolphins will face the PMB Collegians at home. The action kicks off at 2 pm on the field at Sugar Rush.

The junior season gets underway this Sunday at Northwood Crusaders from 10.30am and the North Coast community’s support is welcomed.
