Ballito’s Dolphins stumble against Westville
A polished opposition that dominated almost all aspects of the game.
The Great Railroad Brewery Dolphins took on first division log leaders Westville in an away game over the weekend.
The second team was up first and but game up against a resolute and polished opposition that dominated almost all aspects of the game throughout.
The 52-0 drubbing is a clear sign that although the Dolphins team are growing, there is still a long road ahead and depth is something they will need to work on.
Jaco Nel and Buren Peters scooped man of the match honours.
The first team looked resplendent in their new Great Railroad brewery kit as they took to the field but from the outset it was clear that the week off had manifested itself in a lack of match readiness.
The home team ran in a quick try and a slotted a penalty to lead 8-0.
This was answered by a try from Dolphins left wing Brian Dube with the conversion attempt sailing wide.
Westville responded immediately, taking advantage of an uncharacteristic lapse in the Dolphins defense to score another converted try right under the posts – the teams going to half time at 15-5.
Some stern words from coach and captain as well as lots of cajoling from the small travelling support saw the Dolphins lift their game once more, Zam Mthembu scoring an ultimately unconverted try.
The momentum ebbed and flowed and the Dolphins managed to bring it within one score (23-17) after Jack Severs calmly converted a Moses Mpande try with five minutes left on the clock.
The game was however over when Westville slotted a late penalty to put the result beyond doubt – final score 26-17.
Kenny Granney and the exciting youngster Andrew Livingston are going to give the selectors confidence and a selection dilemma. Chris Anker and Blair Haslam were awarded man of the match honours.
