Landing the big one!
Ashwin Singh is also the chairman of the Blackfin Angling Club, Westbrook ski boat club and promotes awareness of marine environmental hazards and the protection of endangered species.
Maidstone’s accomplished angler, Ashwin Singh brought pride to KZN when he fished out top honours at the South African FIP-M Championships held in the West Coast of South Africa (Bergrivier to Dwarskersbos), April 27 to 30.
The three-day competition endured harsh weather conditions and as a result the water was clogged with debris of uprooted kelp that normally dominates the Cape water.
Despite these daunting conditions and tough competition from anglers of all nine provinces of South Africa, Ashwin was victorious after catching the largest edible and inedible fish of the tournament and after a three- day wait he was announced the South African shore angling association’s 2016 champion.
Ashwin said he first started fishing as a youngster as a way to sustain his family.
“Later it turned into a hobby. I have been fishing competitively for about 16 years now.”
He said more people need to be aware of fishing as a competitive sport.
“With the high crime rate in South Africa, it’s important to promote such sports in our community as an intervention to divert the youth’s attention away from bad influences and toward positive initiatives like sport,” he said.
Being the first person of colour to win the South African Shore Angling Association championships is just one of Ashwins many accomplishments.
He is also the chairman of the Blackfin Angling Club, Westbrook ski boat club and promotes awareness of marine environmental hazards and the protection of endangered species.
“All the fish that are caught, are released into the water after measuring which usually takes less than a minute. We cannot allow fishing to interfere with the health of the ecosystem.”
Ashwin will represent KZN in the world FIPS-M Championship that will take place in Ireland in November.
