Boardriders heat up Winter Classic

The boys put on an amazing show with some radical surfing, matching each other wave for wave.

The North Coast Boardriders annual Winter Classic was held last Sunday the prime venue of Surfers (Willard Beach), Ballito.

The rain did not keep the competitors away as many of the best local and out-of-towners went head to head.

The waves resembled those of the final day of the 2016 Ballito Pro, ensuring some high performance surfing was on display.

The stacked field was narrowed down throughout the day to the eventual finalists for the junior and open divisions.

In the U/20 man-on-man final, Calvin Goor was up against Braiden Coates.

The boys put on an amazing show with some radical surfing, matching each other wave for wave. At the sound of the buzzer it was Goor edging out Coates for first place in this division.

The open men’s final was another close affair with sublime conditions as the wind dropped.

All the finalists were racking up good scoring waves with a flurry of excellent rides in the dying minutes of the heat.

In the end Jaco Kapp managed to hold on to the lead and win the prestigious open division, with Byron Lindsay in a close second, followed by Janeck Ferrandi in third and Scott Venter from the Bluff finishing in fourth.

The event’s organisers thanked the sponsors, Billabong, Dakine, Von Zipper, Find the Stoke and Groundswell Surf Shop for making it possible.

The entry fees raised from the event will be donated to the Feline Feral Fund.
