Ballito's Benjamin Habig also bagged two third places in heat one and heat four which rocketed him into second overall for the 2016 SA National Championship in the DD2 class.
Tonykart driver and Ballito boy, Benjamin Habig, finished the 2016 SA National Championship on a high by winning heat two in the competitive DD2 Championship.
He also bagged two third places in heat one and heat four. This rocketed Habig into second overall for the 2016 SA National Championship in the DD2 class.
Bradley Liebenberg won the 2016 DD2 Championship, but is unable to participate in the 2016 Rotax World Finals in Italy, which saw second placed Habig being included in the SA Team.
But, there is an unfortunate twist in this story – Habig is a matric student at Ashton International College and will not be competing at this championship as he will be writing his IEB Matric finals.
“I am obviously disappointed – this would have been my third Karting World Championship, and this team is made up of only nine South African drivers, who are selected after completion of 12 regional races and four nationals, each consisting of three heats,” said Benjamin.
The 250 odd drivers from 55 countries are required to qualify from 15 000 drivers world-wide, and only the National Champion from each country in every class is included in the team.
In 2014 the SA team of which Habig was a member, won the Cup of Nations trophy in Spain.
Benjamin Habig currently has a healthy lead of over 100 in the 2016 KZN Karting Championship, and he will compete in the remaining two regional events.
