KwaDukuza FC downed by United

Masango scored the opening goal in the first half and Modiba put the nail in the match coffin during the final minutes of the game

KwaDukuza United FC were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by the defending champions Supersport United at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban last week Tuesday.

KwaDukuza FC surprised everyone when they won their first round of the tournament against Ajax Cape Town in March. However, the Jaguar Boys’ defence failed to keep a close eye on opponants Mandla Masango and Aubrey Modiba who each scored a goal.

Masango scored the opening goal in the first half and Modiba put the nail in the match coffin during the final minutes of the game.

The KwaDukuza team had a chance to open the scoring after Supersport goalkeeper Rowen Williams made a mistake. However, he managed to recover and pulled off a great save.

Assisitant coach Thabo Pheko said Supersport used their chances wisely compared to KwaDukuza and he thanked the people and the municipality for the support.

“Supersport is a superior team to us and we wish them all the best in the tournament. We ran our race and learnt a lot in the Nedbank Cup. We will use the experience going forward,” said Pheko.

Despite this it was clear that the Pretoria team did not expect an easy match as they brought their strongest squad including the likes of Dean Furman, Kisten Nkatha, Thuso Phala and Masango.

United FC plays in the ABC Motsepe League (the third division of the country’s professional football league) and have received great support from the KwaDukuza community.

Before the game, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu was seen on the streets of KwaDukuza asking people to come out in numbers to support their players. The municipality also provided transport and tickets to soccer fans who went to support the team.
