Jetting through Salmon Bay

The South African Jet Sport Boating Association (SAJSBA) national jet ski racing final was a great success despite the windy weather

The best of the best in the world of speed over the seas descended on Salmon Bay on Saturday to duke it out on jet skis.

The South African Jet Sport Boating Association (SAJSBA) national jet ski racing final was a great success despite the windy weather.

Concerns were raised before the event about the possible detrimental effect on marine life such as whales and the event was moved from Salt Rock to Salmon Bay.

Fortunately this did not prove to be a problem as spotters were on duty to halt the races should a whale or the like have arrived.

“The success of this event was mainly due to the professional and efficient team at KwaDukuza municipality who went out of their way to assist our SAJSBA committee in making this event happen.

“A very special thanks also to the Ballito/Salmon Bay Boat Club committee who accommodated our event at short notice,” said organiser Mandy Rootman.

Three time world Champion Jared Moore was one of the names that drew the crowd to the beach to watch some of the best racing in both the stand up and sit down classes.

Rowan Sharpies took first place in the veterans category, while Jared Moore took the pro runabout open and Devin Beattie the pro ski and ski lite categories.

Jonathan Raolo won the sport lite category, Warwick Claasen the novice ski class and Chez Thackeray took first in the novice runabout.

Unfortunately the wind came up at lunch time and due to a treacherous shore break the last race had to be called off for safety reasons.

“Thank you to our local sponsors that included KwaDukuza Municipality, IPSS Medical Rescue, Hire-Core KZN, Formscaff, Salt Rock Hotel, Marshal Tools, Tolsen Tools, Blue Bottle Liquors, F*IT, Little Rascals Pre-School, Wood Chipping Services, Racetech Yamaha and Motul.”

SAJSBA looks forward to bringing a jet ski festival to the Dolphin Coast again in 2018 and interested parties can keep up to date by visiting SAJSBA on Facebook.
