Ballito dancers come out tops at Commonwealth Dance Cup

Ten young Ballito dancers showed off their moves and came out tops at the Commonwealth Dance Cup hosted by Sun City and the South African Body of Dance recently.

Known as the Gravity Team, the dancers from DanceWeb proudly represented South Africa as they competed against teams from Gibraltar, Malaysia, Canada and Australia and took first place as well as the Judge’s Choice award.

The team consists of Sbabalwe Tundzi, Senamile Khanyile, Jordyn Grace, Ariyanah Singh, Pia Govender and Mia Bullock who impressed the international panel of judges with their fierce footwork.

Besides their outstanding group achievement, the dancers also took to the stage in solo and duo hip hop parts.

Sbabalwe Tundzi won silver for his solo and said the Commonwealth Dance Cup was fantastic.

“I experienced lots of different cultures and made new friends,” said the 12-year-old Ashton College pupil whose favourite dance move is Chicken Noodle Soup.

Tundzi also came second in the duo section together with fellow 12-year-old Ashton pupil, Senamile Khanyile.

“This was my first international competition, so I was really nervous at the beginning. The other dancers were so strong and the standard of dancing was high,” said Khanyile, whose signature move is the Bizmark which is a mix between strength and groove.

Khanyile also placed fourth in the hip hop solo. Jordyn Grace (10) and Ariyanah Singh (13) said they had an awesome time and loved watching the other teams perform.

“Sun City is a fantastic place and it was so nice to see all the different countries in their tracksuits. Our team was very excited when we won the judges award, but when our team number was called for first place we just screamed,” said Grace, who goes to Umhlali Preparatory School and loves doing high kicks and splits.

Sibongiseni Mpanza made seventh place in the hip hop solo and, together with Joshua Phillips, came seventh for the duo.

Founders and coaches of DanceWeb Studios, Craig and Mandy Bullock are beaming with pride over their dancers’ achievements.

“It is so great to give our dancers the opportunity to compete at this international event and to then come home with gold is incredible,” said Mandy.
