McGregor bounces back

The loss to Hill certainly stung a little, as afterwards McGregor was quoted as saying: "First is everything, second is nothing."

Dolphin Coast and international paddling star Hank McGregor had two uncharacteristic second place finishes in Australia recently, but returned to top form with a win in Durban last week.

Down under, McGregor claimed a silver medal win at the 2017 ICF Ocean Racing World Championships, coming second to Australia’s Cory “Chill” Hill.

The loss to Hill certainly stung a little, as afterwards McGregor was quoted as saying: “First is everything, second is nothing.”

After the Ocean Racing World Championships, he took to the oceans of Western Australia for the final World Surfski Series race of the year, the Perth Doctor November 26.

Unfortunately, Hill was once again the 2016 winner’s kryptonite, as McGregor raced at an average pace of 3:28 min/km, battling it out with Hill from the start. The disappointment of Australia was washed away during the the fifth and final race of the 2017 Illovo Suncoast Pirates Wall and Back Surfski Series in Durban though.

McGregor showed that he was not suffering from the tough few weeks racing overseas when he emphatically claimed the win.

“It’s great to be back at the Wall and Back series having only been able to do two races this year due to local and international commitments,” McGregor said.

“It was awesome to get the win last night and support a local series like the Wall and Back.”

The Wall and Back series is known for dishing up some tricky conditions and Thursday night’s race was no different as paddlers had their work cut out for them over the 8km course.

With that said, McGregor’s understanding of how to deal with varying conditions gave him the edge over the rest of the field.
