Surfers from Ilembe proved their mettle at Bronze Beach when they delivered a stunning performance at the Lizzard/Hurricane KZN Surfing Champs last weekend in a field of close on 150 surfers.

The Lizzard/Hurricane KZN Surfing Champs was hosted by Wave Wizards Surf Club and was sanctioned by the KZN Surfing Association.

Four districts were included: Ethekweni, Ilembe, Ugu and King-Cetshwayo.

Meanwhile, Sophie Bell continued her climb to the top of the surfing world by claiming yet another first place, this time in the U18 girl’s category.

In the masters men 35+ Rein van de Wall from Westbrook placed fourth for Ilembe while Greg Swart bagged a silver medal in the masters men 45+ group and finally, Dan Redman came fourth in the open men’s event.

Ballito’s Greg Swart was also honoured with the Aloha Award for the surfer with the most stoke and spirit.

Surfing SA Board Member and Contest Director Anne Wright said: “This contest just gets bigger and better every year. It is known as the ‘fun’ competition and surfers really look forward to taking part.

“It is especially special as kids U10 take part with their parents which includes surfers over 50.
