Getting the ball rolling at Footy

The Ballito United Football Club (BUFC) was recently founded.

The beautiful game finally has an official club here in Ballito and kids of all ages are invited to join in the football fun.

Ballito United Football Club (BUFC) was recently founded by Steve Welsh, who told the Courier it was about time locals had a full 11-man team to represent them.

“We have already had more than 150 players express interest in joining,” said Welsh.

“Ballito has been in need of a community based football club which caters for all that wish to play regardless of level of skill. The club has been registered as a non-profit entity and PBO (Public Benefit Organisation).”

BUFC had their first training session on Sunday at Sugar Rush Park.

They will form part of the expanding Ballito Dolphins Sports Club, which will no longer just be about rugby but include soccer, hockey and more.

Sunday’s session provided much fun as it was just to gauge where the players stand and how to move forward.

Children of all ages, both boys and girls, had a literal ball and the future of the club looks bright.

Welsh told the Courier their goals were:

  • to provide football to children of all ages and abilities in a safe and friendly environment;
  • to deliver age-appropriate coaching to support long-term player development;
  • to encourage all players to try their best and make the most of their abilities, while having fun;
  • to offer a challenging but supportive environment where children can learn from their mistakes without undue pressure and anxiety and finally to promote good behaviour and respect for others.

The club has already been registered with the Durban Central Football Association and will take part in the league starting in April.

Practice sessions will be as follows: seniors (U12 – U19) on Monday and Wednesday from 4.30pm-6pm and juniors (U6-U8) on Tuesday and Thursday from 4pm-5pm and U9-U11 from 5pm-6pm. There is a once off registration fee which will cover membership as well as players’ kits.
