Nurturing recovery through sport

Based in Ballito, the centre helps people recuperate from disabling illness or injuries so they can return to their homes, work and community environments.

In support of Casual Day and spinal cord awareness last Friday, the Nurture iLembe rehabilitation centre held a sports day for its patients.

Practicing her ball kicking skills is Hlengiwe Mkhize (right) with Nurture iLembe’s Nonto Ngidi.

The sports day was co-organised by Nurture iLembe occupational therapist, Lucia de Almeida, who arranged activities such as ring tosses, basket ball throws and bean bag tosses.

Patient Dolly Gumede takes time off with sport day organiser and occupational therapist Lucia de Almeida and her daughter, Sophia.

But De Almeida said the programme was also used as an opportunity to raise awareness around disabilities.

Felicia Mlamba tosses rings, aided by Nurture iLembe’s Ashleigh Hempson and Nontokozo Sibiya.

“It is important for our patients to participate in fun, active tasks so they stay motivated.”

Patients also engaged with past patients who shared their journeys of recovery.

Enjoying a basketball toss was Jinny Koumantarakis, supported by Kiara Birbal.

“Advice from someone who has had a similar journey is more valuable than just taking the word of a therapist,” De Almeida said.
