Palm Lakes ace angler Ethan gets SA call-up

"This will be a great achievement for me and I cannot wait for the opportunity of competing at international level."

Avid young angler Ethan Combrinck has not only been awarded his provincial colours recently, he will represent South Africa at an international fishing tournament against Namibia next month.

The 15-year-old Palm Lakes resident and Northwood Boys High School pupil’s passion for fishing began when he was 12 after his stepfather introduced him to the sport.

He has been a member of the Umhlali Angling Club since 2018, and his commitment to achieve sees him spending countless hours working his fishing rod to hone his skills.

The former Umhlali Preparatory pupil said he practices angling at every opportunity.

“I mostly practice on weekends when not playing rugby or training in the gym,” Ethan said, adding he could not wait for the opportunity of competing at international level against Namibia in Jeffrey’s Bay between December 5-8.

The competition results will be determined by the largest accumulative weight of fish caught.

“Gold medals are at stake and this will be a great achievement for me. In addition to this, there is also an award for the top angler as an individual within the tournament,” Ethan said.

Janine said her son has been exposed to a culture of competitiveness where he had formed good friendships with like-minded individuals.

“This has broadened his outlook into the world of competitive sport and what it takes to succeed at the highest level. Having his Protea colours will definitely open many doors nationally and internationally,” she said.

Unfortunately, many so-called minor sport codes do not attract the attention and support of big sponsors or receive sport body funding, with shore angling being no exception.

“Members of the U16 Protea team are expected to fund all their own expenses, the total cost of which is R21 300,” said Janine.
