Bulelani on a mission to develop township sport

When not busy with his sport development projects, Vukuthi works as a soccer, cross-country and fitness coach for Ashton International College. He is also part of the Ballito FC coaching team.

From a young age, Bulelani Vukuthi had always wanted to be a sport coach for township and rural children.

What motivated him was that he always felt left out when he was still a school pupil, despite being a talented athlete.

“I was regularly selected to represent iLembe in athletics but most of the districts had coaches and we had none, so we lost out.

“This inspired me to become a coach myself to ensure that children from my area never feel the way I felt when competing against other kids,” said Vukuthi.

“We used to be accompanied by someone, usually a teacher, who liked sport but was not professionally trained.”

The 31-year-old Nkobongo resident is now an accredited soccer, athletics and fitness coach.

He coaches an athletic team ’14 Fast Movers’, consisting of 20 athletes from the iLembe region.

“This year five of our athletes competed in national cross-country and track and field school competitions. I also offer my coaching to other township kids free of charge who are not part of the team.”

Vukuthi also coaches the Guzane Secondary School soccer team that recently competed in the MTN Mini League held at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi.

Playing against several rated schools from various districts, his squad walked away as runners-up and won R3 000 and kit.
