Rylie Balfour claims Surf School championships at Willard Beach
The highest scoring waves of the day went to Joel Duncan, Nate Tayler, Sebastian Garnett, Tino Zedde and Jadon Brown.
Surfing star Rylie Balfour grabbed first place in the highly competitive end-of-year Ballito Surf School championships last week.
The 13-year-old fought off tough competition from fellow finalists Nate Tayler (2nd), Daniel Edwards (3rd) and Joel Duncan (4th) to earn his spot atop the podium.
The annual competition includes all 16 surfers from the surf school’s high performance section, together colloquially known as ‘HP Sauce’.

Surfers train twice a week at the school, honing their skills on the North Coast’s best local breaks.
“We always wait for an afternoon with good surf, and this year was probably the best we’ve had conditions wise. Many of the surfers had their best waves in a competition,” said Ballito Surf School owner, Janek Ferrandi.
Although the event did not count towards official rankings, there was a R3 000 prize on offer, ensuring full focus from the youngsters.
Over two-and-a-half hours at Willard Beach, the group was whittled down to the final four, after which Balfour stayed the course and peaked at the right time.
