Slam dunk for KwaDukuza councillor Sanele Mthiyane elected to SASCOC board

Mthiyane has been the president of Basketball South Africa since 2015 after serving as vice-president and chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal Basketball Association.

KwaDukuza ward 16 councillor Sanele Mthiyane says he is humbled to serve on the Board of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

Mthiyane was elected to SASCOC last month, where he joins the likes of sport supremo Dr Sam Ramsamy.

“Dr Ramsamy is one of the most astute sport administrators of our time and I hope to benefit from his international experience, wisdom, and institutional knowledge,” said Mthiyane.

SASCOC is the national body responsible for oversight of various national federations and provincial sports councils.

The committee presides over events of high calibre including the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, Commonwealth and All-Africa Games.

Mthiyane has been the president of Basketball South Africa since 2015 after serving as vice-president and chairman of the KwaZulu-Natal Basketball Association.

He began playing basketball in the 1990s when the sport had just begun to gain some popularity in the country.

This was at the peak of legends such as Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal and the international tour of the Harlem Globetrotters.

“With the help of Lali Soobramoney and Anand Pillay, basketball was added as a code at the 1997 Tonver Lower Tugela Games, at which ML Sultan Secondary School were crowned champions.

“During the same year, I joined the Rim Shakers Basketball Club in Shakaville which produced Siyabonga Yingwana, Pinkie Mdletshe, Lwandile Masango and many other KZN and national athletes.”

As basketball sees a rise in popularity, Mthiyane said Basketball SA was implementing a club development system for the sport.

“We are doing this through our districts and provincial associations. The goal is to provide capacity building programmes for our coaches and technical officials.

“As part of our mass participation programme and talent identification, we are partnering with organisations such as NBA Africa through their Junior NBA League programme to roll out a national initiative targeting schools,” said the father of six.
