Skaters shred at Ballito skate park

Skaters had the opportunity of impressing the judges in two one-minute runs, where they could use the bowl, half-pipe, street-skating section or a mix of the three.

The upgraded Ballito skate park continues to be a well-used community asset, seeing some excellent skating of all levels in a competition on Saturday.

Hosted by Skate Vision, an organisation centred in Durban which is trying to promote skating through development communities, the event drew dozens of competitors from across the province.

Crowds pulled in too, watching the skaters who were split into three categories – beginner boys, ladies and advanced men.

Skaters had the opportunity of impressing the judges in two one-minute runs, where they could use the bowl, half-pipe, street-skating section or a mix of the three, allowing skaters of all specialties to get involved.

This was followed by five attempts at the skaters’ best trick, with the four best scores from the full runs and best trick sections combined counting for the leaderboard.

Levi Vosloo took gold in the beginner boys section, followed closely by Gordon Falangile and Miguel Maratis.

TJ Magazi leaps into the air for a trick down the waterfall.

The ladies category was won by Catelyn King, with Jessica Louw and Molly Asiphe grabbing silver and bronze respectively.

Kalvyn ‘TiNk’ Mac Millan – one of KwaZulu-Natal’s best known skaters – won the advanced men event, with Mikey Sparrow and Ezra Vosloo leading the chasing pack.

The winners all received sponsored gifts, with the event supported by Zoo York SA, Stay in Motion Skate, Groundswell Skate and Surf Store, K Creations, Pyro Skateboards and Skate Cast.

Gordon Falangile launches himself skyward on his way back up the waterfall.

Keep an eye out for the next competition at the bowl. The skating community is one of the most supportive around and it is always a good time watching the talent.
